Watercolor Stripes & Splatter Handmade Card

Watercolor Stripes & Splatter Handmade Card

I have not made any cards in quite some time and as I am getting back into cardmaking and making more of an effort to post on my blogs, I thought I would start with one made particularly for Kristina Werner’s monthly mail call.  I did not start the card with a plan (which I normally prefer to do) or at the very least a sketch and had quite a few false starts.  I was hoping to make a congratulations card for July’s mail call and I wanted to use watercolor in some way without heading straight for distress inks.  Don’t get me wrong, I love distress inks but I had been hoarding a lovely new collection of watercolor paints and wanted to break them in.  A couple of months ago I purchased the Sakura Koi Field Sketch Set and the Sakura 18pc Watercolor Tube Set.   I had heard great things about both sets and had seen them used in many videos.

Watercolor Striped and Splatter Congratulations Handmade Card After creating some watercolor ink blots I was completely unhappy with, I got out my painter’s tape and made some stripes on watercolor paper.  I am not sure if subconsciously I was thinking about the August mail call which is dedicated to striped cards but it definitely turned into an August card.  I ended up mostly using the Sakura Koi Field Sketch Set for both the stripes and splatters.  The color intensity is quite good and I was very surprised at how vibrant the colors were.  Once the stripes were dry, I used my watercolor brush to flick on some splatters in various colors, trimmed down the paper to size and layered it on some printed kraft patterned paper from DCWV with foam square adhesive.  Unfortunately it is an older 6×6 stack called the printed craft stack which has been discontinued.  I alternated the stripe directions to add interest as the pattern going all the same direction did not look right.

Watercolor Striped and Splatter Congratulations Handmade CardI used two different stamp sets from My Favorite Things – Masculine Graphic Tee (YOU ROCK) and Airplane Greetings (Congratulations) with black Stazon ink.  Because the watercolor paper was so textured, the You Rock sentiment came out a bit splotchy.  I filled in the bad stamped areas with a Distress Ink black marker.  Everything was attached to the base card with my tape runner adhesive.  Hope you like it.
